BOLD 8th-grade student Neil Kadlec was the winner of the Southwest West Central Cooperative and Southwest Minnesota State University’s 22nd Annual Creating Spaces Writing Contest! The awards ceremony was held on April 12, 2026, at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.

Neil got the idea for his story last summer and said he originally wrote the story for fun. When he found out about the contest, he decided to enter his story. Neil was notified by mail that he was a finalist and found out he was the winner at the awards ceremony. Neil took home the first-place honors for the 8th-grade fiction category.

Neil, BOLD School staff are so proud of you! Congratulations! You are a fabulous representative of our district. Keep writing!

On April 9, the BOLD Senior High Band had Dr. John Ginocchio(Director of Bands at SMSU) come out and evaluate the band on their performance of two selections. This took the place of the Large Group Contest at Lakeview HS that was cancelled due to winter weather. Following their performance, Dr. Ginocchio took some time to work with them on some things that we could improve on. The band earned a Superior rating for their outstanding work! Way to go Band!

Greetings BOLD Community,

Thank you FFA for the fabulous pancake breakfast this morning. It was great to see parents and community members show up for that.

Air balance being completed

We are having inspectors from IEA out next week to look at some Elementary Classrooms and check behind the walls to make sure there is no mold growth due to all the steam leaks in the pipes last winter. We are hoping they do not find anything, but we want to make sure; and if they do find something that is potentially dangerous to the air quality, we will do whatever it takes to get it cleaned up to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Have a groovy weekend.

Greetings BOLD Community,

I hope students enjoyed a little more pajama time yesterday. I know that e learning days can be really hard on parents, especially parents with small children, which is why I called it early. As many know, I have 5 year old twins, and finding out the day before a closing is invaluable to us. Unfortunately, that can be a gamble, especially on the prairie, but my intention was to err on the side of safety and give families time to make necessary adjustments.

In other news, we have a major renovation still raging on, and here is the Weekly Construction Update:

Area E (New Entrance)

Working on mudding drywall until the end of this week

Painting Monday the 6th

Flooring Monday the 6th,

Will have the hallway open for high schoolers on the 13th for them to walk from HS hallway to the Main Office area.

Glass storefront and receptionist doors are being installed on the 6th.

Ceiling starting the 8th

Furniture, case work, doors / hardware will be installed on the 13th

Area D (NW Corner)

Structural issues have been resolved; working on a plan to be updated. They should be completed by April 6, end of day, then send contractors for change order pricing.

With the structural issues resolved, we can put in footings and foundation. They started on Monday, and have already completed one area.

They are going to be working on the south side, where it meets up with the current cafeteria; then we will be heading north along the west side.

You will see CMU (concrete masonry units) wall going up starting the 13th. We will have double crew; it should go up pretty fast.

Have a great spring break, albeit a short one!

The BOLD 5th and 6th graders worked on an Engineering Challenge, presented by sciencebuddies.org, which was to design and build a ball run for a ping pong ball using nothing but paper and tape. The goal was to make the slowest ball run possible, using up to 30 sheets of paper and 1 roll of masking or clear tape. The ball run needed to be at least 10 inches high with an exit at least 1 inch off the ground/table. You can check out the runs our students created and vote for your favorite at the following website. The team with the most votes in each region will earn $1,000 for their school. Voting ends on April 7, 2026.

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/engineering-challenge/2026/showcase

You will need to log in/join with a free account to be able to see and vote for one. If you enter the school as BOLD -Bird Island Elementary and USA as the country it will bring you to our teams' ball runs, but you can look at all of the entries around the world as well. Student faces are blurred for safety reasons, but if you know the students you can ask them which one is theirs. I hope you enjoy their finished projects. It was very fun to watch them work as teams to create them. - Sarah Iverson (K-6 STEAM teacher)

Greetings BOLD Parents and Guardians,

We would like to thank the parents and guardians who volunteer to chaperone our field trips. We understand that being asked to pay a $15 background check fee may not feel like an expression of gratitude, and we want you to know that this fee can be waived if it presents a barrier to participation.

The $15 fee helps offset the total cost of each background check, which is $45. This allows the district to manage the significant expense of conducting these checks while ensuring the safety of our students and providing all interested parents and guardians the opportunity to chaperone.

We appreciate your understanding and your continued support of our students’ learning.
Sincerely,

Tim Tydlacka

On Saturday, March 28 BOLD Band and Choir students participated in MSHSL Subsection 12 Solo and Ensemble Contest at Benson High School. 2 Vocal Duets, 1 Mixed Choral Group (Pop Singers), 6 Vocal Solos, and 9 Instrumental Solos performed for judges who would critique and work with the students on a variety of performance factors. Students were given ratings consisting of Fair, Good, Excellent, and Superior. Of the 18 events that performed, 2 received Excellent and 16 received Superior ratings with Seth Lippert receiving a Best at Site Award for his vocal solo. The students all did an amazing job! Mr. Strandberg (Band) and Mr. Kunka (Choir) are very proud of their outstanding achievements!

Greetings BOLD Community,

Until today, I was beginning to think like many others that there was either no pile of Bird Island building bricks set aside or that the pile was invisible.

Well, today after talking to Wayne, who is overseeing the demo, I learned that there is, indeed, a pile, and it is visible, albeit much smaller than I had imagined. Attached, is a picture of "The Pile."

Wayne assured me that he fully understands the importance of keeping the pile alive for community members, and he said he has been and will continue to hand pick the "good" bricks to add to the pile throughout the demo.

The top floor is supposed to be down by the end of the day today, but they are still waiting for "structural issues" to be resolved before taking down the bottom two floors.

Greetings BOLD Community,

Snowflakes have been sighted in Bird Island, but I haven't seen anyone firing up any snowmobiles. I have seen some lawn mowers moving around, however. This is a confusing time.

Although I cannot predict the weather around here, obviously, I can give a construction update, and here it is:

Area E (New Entrance)

Taping
Painting starts end of next week
eEectrical inspection passed
Mechanical complete minus RTU (Rooftop Unit) set
Planned for next week
Plumbing inspection Monday
Tile for toilet rooms Monday

Area D (NW Corner)

Dewatered
Elevator wall ready to be set next week

Bird Island

The demolition continues

The munchers still have not munched, but they will be munching soon, and I will give the heads up to the community when I get the heads up from Nexus.

I hosted my first "Coffee with Mr. Tea" yesterday morning at 7 am in the District Office Trailer. No one showed up, but I also forgot to mention the invite in my last update.

For future reference, I will be hosting "Coffee with Mr. Tea" in the District Office trailer at 7 am on the second and fourth Thursday of the month. The next one will be April 9th. All are welcome. There is no agenda. I hope to see someone next time!

Take care everyone,

Tim
